One Month Recap of College

College terms over here are 11 weeks long so we have already done midterms and even though I am only doing 3 classes, the time feels very busy along with spending much time doing homework assignments. My class choices this term were Introduction to Computer Science, Networking Essentials, and Introduction to Microsoft operating system.

Introduction to Computer Science: This class is supposed to cover concepts on the surface while following Computer Science Illuminated by Nell Dale and John Lewis however followed the book for the first about 5 chapters and then started to go in-depth about Python programming (including needing to know how to code). Classwork includes discussion boards and take-home assignments. Discussion boards for me are the easiest of the two. Currently the take-home assignments are consisting of needing to develop a code to put into Python that will produce a certain output which are assignments are laid out of what the output is supposed to say or supposed to indicate. The latest one was doing the Rock, Paper, Scissors game and ensure it included the for count loop. Programming is not my thing I would say since takes me quite a while to accomplish. Discussion boards have been over computer ethics, qualities that employees would like to see in the computer science field, and the such like.

Intro to Microsoft: This class talks about the Microsoft Windows version 10 and consists of doing group projects such as figuring out how to put ISO on a flashdrive along with Rufus or a service like that so then you can install Windows on a computer, writing a log book that covers things you do in class but also research topics that are given to you to do, and a project that consist of building something that uses a operating system to work. One of the individual (so not group) assignments required utilizing Hoonuit to do an Windows 10-indepth training which was watching several hours of clips (even if the clips were only several minutes long, there was around 40 clips) and then doing some quizzes to test your knowledge.

Networking Essentials: This class uses one of the Cisco websites for the course material called Netacad. You do your reading and exams on this website including midterm and final. The information you learn in this class is anywhere from IPv4 to ICMP to DHCP to ISO and TCP/IP to configuring devices via CLI on Packet Tracer to how data gets encapsulated and gets sent to local and remote networks. My favorite part of this class I would say is Packet Tracer since that's all just CLI and those steps and commands also make sense to me. Exams can be on the harder to understand side of things for me though I am doing well overall in this class. Our midterm exam was strictly over Packet Tracer and needing to do whatever they asked of us which in my case was configuring two switches, one router, ensuring all devices had IP addresses and default gateway, and that all devices could ping each other.

Something I have learned over time that it can take a long time to do assignments and that college can be very stressful as well especially when you know that some assignments require use of a program that does not run on your device so you keep having to go to campus often to get things down and you feel like you have a time crunch as well even though you were given a week to work on the assignment however does not mean you can get access to the computers that have access to the program 5 days a week. I do occasionally borrow help on assignments especially in my Intro to Computer Science class. Currently the college does not have any tutors for computer science or computer information systems but I know how to get help from my current online pool of acquaintances. My goal is to do well enough in my classes to actually become a tutor in the classes.
